A governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, Otunba Segun Adewale, has announced a donation of N1 million to ease financial hardship being faced by students of Ekiti State origin in tertiary institutions.

 Adewale urged the students to embrace skills acquisition, saying that the Nigerian economy had changed from mere acquisition of academic certificates to practical assessment of individual skills.

 The politician announced the donation yesterday while delivering a lecture titled “Entrepreneurship, a sustainability to the economy of Ekiti,” organized by the Federation of Ekiti State Students’ Union (FESSU), Federal University of Technology, Akure  (FUTA) chapter.

 At the event, attended by students of Ekiti origin from other states, the undergraduates complained to the aspirant that the government had allegedly abandoned them by not paying their bursary.

 Adewale, who described non-payment of bursary as an injustice to the future of Ekiti State, said, “It is the responsibility of those in government to give them hope. How can you not pay bursary to students whose parents you owed several months of salary arrears?”

 He told the students that employers were now more interested in their skills and how that affects the profitability of businesses than in their courses of study. “Your certificate is a means to an end and not an end itself,” he advised them.
