Zainab Jibrin, the mother of one of the traders killed near the Nding community in the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, has expressed grief and shock over the death of her son and family breadwinner, Uwaisu Sunusi.
Uwaisu, 23, was one of four traders attacked and killed on Monday morning by suspected assailants while traveling from Jos to Pankshin LGA. His mother explained that he and his colleagues regularly traveled to Pankshin for the weekly shoe market, but he met his tragic end this past Monday.
Zainab’s son, whom she described as her sole provider, was laid to rest on Monday evening at the Sabon Anguwa Cemetery in Barkin Ladi.
She noted that Uwaisu was her only son and a hardworking young man who struggled to make ends meet for both himself and his family.
Recounting their final moments, she said: “Uwaisu was my son. He loved and cared for me deeply. He used to trade at the Terminus Market, but after traders were moved from there, he began traveling to various villages for his business.
“I warned him not to go to some of those communities because of the security situation, but he believed everything would be alright. On Monday, he told me he was traveling, explaining that the market would be profitable; that was the last I heard from him.
“He showed me all the love a mother could receive from a son. He provided all the necessities with the little he had. He supported his younger siblings, helping to pay their school fees and other expenses. He bought them clothes and also cared for his grandparents.
“But he was stopped and killed for an offence he didn’t commit. They killed my son—my only son. He always sought my happiness. I pray Allah grants him eternal rest. He loved me, but now there is nothing I can do.”
The Plateau State Government has issued a statement condoling the families of the victims and assuring residents that every effort is being made to track down those responsible for the attack.
Authorities also urged citizens to remain calm and law-abiding.
