Assailants murder butcher chief in Sapele

The Chairman of Delta Butchers Association, Sapele branch, Mr. Michael Onyeachi Nweke, has been reportedly murdered by suspected assailants at an abattoir in Sapele, Sapele Local Government Area of Delta state.

A source confirmed to our correspondent that Nweke was allegedly killed on Saturday night at about 9pm at Sapele market abattoir where he was said to be rounding up the day’s sales.

According to her, “Onyeachi was the only one left at the abattoir section of the market and he was rounding up the day’s business when three men attacked him with knives and matchet and stabbed him to death.

“Onyeachi was the chairman of the Delta State Butchers Association, Sapele branch and I can’t remember him quarreling with anybody or planning evil against anyone. He is also into supply of cows and I don’t know why anybody would want to kill Onyeachi,” the source said in tears.

Another witness, who identified himself simply as Jimoh, said Onyeachi had gone home that evening and returned to the abattoir as his house was along Itsekiri road, very close to the market and as it was in his habit, he often went back to the market at night to help the night guards on security.

He further disclosed that he was with a female friend when he was attacked.

He described the sordid incident as a sad development, saying: “we are calling for calm because the incident is fresh and requires thorough investigations.”

Jimoh expressed confidence that the motive behind the murder would be uncovered by security agencies during their investigations.

Meanwhile, the wife of the deceased and some family members are pointing accussing fingers to one Paulo for being responsible for Onyeachi’s killing, alleging that the suspect was ungrateful for all the deceased has done for him.

Although, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Anieamaka, could not be reached for comment, a source at the Sapele Police station confirmed the murder, saying “they came to report the issue last night.”

The Police source added that there was suspicion of internal strife within the association, adding that the police and other security agencies are working on intelligence lead for possible arrest of whosoever has a hand in the murder.
