The governor has also signed into law the 2009 local government appropriation and finance bill totalling over N29 billion.Before signing the bills, Gaidam said the extension would provide sufficient and appropriate time-frame for elected council chairmen to pursue and implement policies and programmes on the basis of which they canvassed for the people’s support to win elections.

He said tenure of local government chairmen had seen many changes in Yobe State which affected the performance of leaders. “This ranges from three years as in the principle law which was amended to 30 months and subsequently amended twice to 13 months and 18 month respectively”, he said.

“This amendment will no doubt provide the local councils with ample time to implement their programmes and activities. It is our fervent hope and expectation that the incoming elected councils will have this rare opportunity to serve their people well”, the governor added.

The state independent electoral commission (SIEC) has slated August 8th as the date of the chairmanship and councillorship elections which was conducted only once since the advent of this democratic dispensation”.

Earlier, speaker of the Yobe State House of Assembly Usman Adamu said the aim of the two bills was to improve the quality of lives of the people at the grassroots.
