Members of the class 1978 Wudil Teachers College Old Student Association (WUTCOSA) in Kano state have expressed concern over the scrapping of Teacher Training Colleges, blaming the development for the rot in the country’s education system.

The association noted with concern in a statement released through its Public Relations Officer, Malam Sani Muhammad, that scrapping of the institutions was a disservice to the nation’s education sector.

“The colleges, which previously trained grade II teachers, were meant to produce qualified teachers to teach in the nation’s primary schools to pave way for a sound background in the educational system,” he said.

He said that scrapping the institutions had further widened the education gap between the northern and the southern parts of the country and urged the government to revisit the issue in the interest of the nation.

“While the south might be ready to accommodate the scrapping of the grade II teacher programme, the north was not ready for that, because the development has led to the production of half-baked teachers at both primary and secondary schools,” the statement argued.
