The president of the club, Idris Tiamiyu, said the conference would enhance reading culture for its members and schools that were partnering with it.
At the club’s second conference held in Abuja, the president noted that the essence of the conference was to promote reading and make people see the importance of reading which of late was being surpassed by entertainment.
He said: “Entertainment has taken over from all sorts of intellectual activities; people don’t want to engage the brain again, so we want to stimulate the people back into making reading interesting and entertaining.”
According to him, regular reading schedules would be communicated to people and their partners and selected books to read this year would also be recommended.
He said while partnering with Esteem International School, Abuja, the club planned to secure its library and manage it in a way that would bring people together for reading activities on a frequent basis.
The guest speaker at the event and author of “Adam and Madam” Abdulfattah Adeyemi noted that the artistic tendency for self expression was being suppressed in many people and that satisfaction and happiness came when you were able to express yourself through writing.
He faulted the attitude of people towards intellectual activities, saying people no longer promote competition in schools and that even when it happened there was not much importance attached to it.
