Members of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic Lafia in Nasarawa State, have joined their counterparts across the country in the two weeks nationwide strike, demanding the immediate payment of over two billion naira of their gratuity.

The ASUP Chairman, Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic branch Mr Sylvester Aku, stated this while addressing journalists immediately after an emergency meeting in Lafia the Nasarawa State capital on Tuesday.

He appealed to the Nasarawa State Government to use the period of the two weeks warning strike to commence the immediate payment of the backlog of gratuity owed lecturers in the state-owned polytechnic amounting to over two billion naira to guarantee industrial harmony.

Mr Aku further noted that the non-release of the N15 billion revitalization fund for the Polytechnic sector, and the failure to implement the new National Minimum Wage by some state governments including Nasarawa were some of the demands of the Polytechnic lecturers.

He said: “Non-release of the Scheme of Service and Conditions of Service for Polytechnics and similar tertiary institutions. Non-release of the reviewed Native, Instrument for Institutions and programme Accreditation.

“Non-release of the CONTISS-15 migration arrears for lower carders. The issue of staff accommodation has been a serious problem for staff of the institution. Like me, I am a chief lecturer entitled to an office, but unfortunately, I am sharing one office with four other of my colleagues.”
