The Yola Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) comprising of universities in Adamawa, Taraba, Borno and Yobe states has faulted the federal government over incomplete release of staff salaries to public universities.
Addressing journalists in Yola, the spokesman of the Union, Dr. Musa Abdullahi, said the recent policy where the federal government released incomplete salaries to the universities was needless, adding that it may force the institutions to raise fees to be able to generate monies to fill the gap, thereby making education unaffordable to the common man.
He explained that since November 2015, public universities have had to source for funds to make up for the shortfall, urging the Buhari administration to reverse the trend in order to save Nigerian students and parents from unnecessary suffering.
“The federal government embarked on this ugly trend ostensibly to compel the universities to augment the shortfall with their Internally Generated Revenue (IGR). The fact is that universities all over the world are servicing organisations and not profit making ventures, therefore the idea that IGR be used to augment salary payment of university staff is akin to commercializing  the university education which our union has been resisting over time and would continue to resist,” he stated.
