ASUU tackles Kogi, Lagos govs over ‘reign of impunity’

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Abuja zone, has berated Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello and his Lagos State counterpart, Akinwumi Ambode, over what they called ‘reign of impunity’ in the sacking of the union’s members in their respective state varsities.
ASUU Abuja zonal coordinator, Dr. Theophilus Lagi, while briefing journalists in Abuja, said Governor Bello sacked 135 seasoned academic staff of Kogi State University without considering the consequences of such move.
Dr Lagi said the depletion of academic staff strength meant doom for academic programmes run by the university, adding that the institution was yet to find quality replacement for the sacked staff.
He disclosed that ASUU had sought the intervention of the courts which restrained Bello from administrative somersaults and ordered him to return to status quo ante in the case of the 135 sacked lecturers.
“Mr Yahaya Bello is yet to direct the reinstatement of these illegitimately and illegally sacked academic staff and allow the exercise of their fundamental human rights without let or hindrance,” he said
While noting that it was wrong for a state with a monthly revenue accruals of N8 billion to sack or owe workers salary which was just around N4.8 billion, he said Bello should respect rule of law and let the voice of reason prevail.
Similarly in Lagos, ASUU is accusing Governor Ambode of unnecessary interference in the affairs of the state owned university, consequent upon the sacking of the union’s chairman, Dr Isaac Oyewumi and his vice, Dr Adebowale Adeyemi-Suenu, recently.
The union said, “Mr Ambode should stop politicking and killing the destinies of the Nigerian youth.”
