The Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) has called on the federal government to sign and implement the renegotiation agreement made to avoid industrial action by the union.

The Zonal Coordinator, ASUU Abuja Zone, Prof. Al-Amin Abdullahi made the call during a news conference on Monday in Abuja.

Abdullahi explained that the union had entered into a renegotiation of the 2009 agreement between the federal government and ASUU, adding that it was concluded in December 2024 but yet to be signed and implemented.

According to him, the FGN reached an Agreement with our union in 2009, famously called the FG/ASUU 2009 Agreement. Almost 17 years after this agreement was signed, its provisions were only partially implemented.

The Abuja ASUU zonal chairman noted that it was impossible for a nation to advance or develop beyond the level of the standard of its university system.

Also, the ASUU, Ibadan Zone, has urged the Federal Government to implement recommendations of the Yayale Ahmed report submitted in February to avert another strike in public universities.

Prof. Biodun Olaniran, ASUU Coordinator, Ibadan Zone, made the call at a news conference held in Ibadan on Monday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that ASUU, Ibadan Zone, has the following ASUU branches under it, University of Ibadan, University of Ilorin and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso.

Others are UNIOSUN, Emmanuel Alayande University of Education and Kwara State University, Malete.

Similarly, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Calabar Zone, has described as `poisoned chalice and unacceptable distraction,’ the Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Loan Scheme offered by the federal government.

The ASUU Zonal Coordinator, Calabar zone, Mr Ikechuku Igwenyi, made the position of the union known at a news conference in Uyo, Akwa Ibom on Monday.

Igwenyi said that ASUU viewed the loan as a distraction and an attempt by federal government to impoverish members instead of honouring the 2009 agreement.

He said that the union was not consulted and their inputs not considered in establishing the tertiary support loan scheme.

He said that the loan conditions are so stringent, as even professors in the universities cannot repay N10 million loan in 48 months if they access it. NAN
