The ASUU National President Dr. Nasir Fagge disclosed this at a symposium organised by the Education Rights Campaign (ERC) and held at the University of Ibadan.
Dr. Fagge said submissions for the summit would soon be forwarded to the National Assembly for inclusion in the National Policy on Education.
He said that the forthcoming summit will address all known challenges confronting education sector in Nigeria, noting that “the first challenge confronting education system in Nigeria is that the current Nigeria constitution is not people-oriented and must be changed.”
“Our constitution is not people-oriented. We must jettison it. A law that protects a leader who steals public fund is definitely not a people-oriented law. The fundamental right in the constitution does not make education our right; we must have right to quality education,” he declared.
Dr. Fagge disclosed that the recent long drawn strike by the university lecturers was an eye opener for the union, particularly as regards to the deplorable situation of Nigerian higher education system.
He said the strike was beyond payment of salaries of universities, lecturers, rather an avenue to pressurise government to address the rot in the nation’s education system.
ASUP representative, Dr. Andersen Ezeife , in his contribution, said despite the fact that the polytechnic lecturers have been on strike for about a year now, government is yet to address any of the 13 demands presented to it by the striking lecturers.
