The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said that the implementation of Treasury Single Account (TSA) is inimical to the smooth operations of universities.
ASUU President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi, stated this at a press conference in Abuja.
The ASUU president said that government must be educated on the workings of the university system as it is impossible for administrators to run their relevant universities through the platform of TSA, adding that its implementation has adversely affected endowments, scholarships and management of research grants.
He also rejected the policy of government regarding the status of university staff schools as the policy violates the 2009 ASUU/FGN Agreement, describing it as an act of impunity which government must immediately reverse.
He said that there is no justification for the short-fall in personnel emoluments of academics who render full services in their universities of primary assignment, condemning the current practices by the government of deliberately paying “factionalized salaries to members such that it is no longer possible to know the percentage that members expect to receive at the end of the month.
“This is surely a recipe for disaster in the university system. If an academic staff can no longer expect to receive salary at the end of the month, it would be difficult for such an individual to concentrate on the smooth delivery of efficient service. This is clearly unacceptable. Government must immediately reverse this trend,” he said.
Prof. Ogunyemi also lamented the economic situation of the country, urging government to arrest the situation as many Nigerians are suffering.
