Students of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, (ATBU), Bauchi have staged a protest over lack of power and water on campus.

They staged the protest at the Yelwa Campus of the university on Friday to press home their demands.

The protest partially paralysed academic activities on the campus as the students blocked the main entrance into the University.

The students said that they want the university’s authority to ameliorate their sufferings.

‎Some of the protesting students said that their hostels have been without electricity and water for weeks and all entreaties to get the management to fix the problems proved abortive.

They also accused the management of preferential treatment of the students as the female hostels have electricity while the male hostels lacks.

The students vowed that no academic activity including their first semester examination will take place until their demands are met. It will be recalled that the students were supposed to start the first semester exams today.

Reacting, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the University, Zailani Bappah, said that, the reason for the disruption was as a result of the failure of the institution’s control room some days ago.

He however informed that a new transformer had already been procured and would be installed to address the power and water problem in the institution while all measures to ameliorate the sufferings of the students had been taken by the authorities within the period.
