A presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, Sam Ohuabunwa, has said any attempt to jettison zoning ahead of the 2023 general election will be a threat to national unity.
Ohuabunwa, who declared his interest in the presidential seat at a press conference yesterday in Abuja, said the principle of power rotation between the North and the South must be sustained.
He said zoning has not outlived its usefulness in a multi-ethnic and religious setting like Nigeria, adding that the time to jettison zoning will come when leaders stop thinking about their region, zone, ethnicity and religion.
“In a country where you have the majority and the minority, if you don’t zone, you will perpetually keep people as slaves. And if you want unity, you must bring inclusiveness. That is my point.
“When we get to the point where we are politically sophisticated and have dealt with all the mundane issues, like housing, education, transportation, healthcare, mortgage system; when we take care of all these mundane things, zoning will become unimportant,” he said.
