The UN chief said this yesterday in Abuja during an audience with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Aminu Wali.
He lamented that there is a tendency for the attention of the international community to be focused on one crisis at a time.
Eliasson however noted that the UN has continued to work closely with the African Union on South Sudan and the CAR in line with the regional cooperation charter.
“It is a bit of a disturbing factor that we are absorbed by one conflict at a time. We need to work together to keep the agenda of peace all the time in all areas: human rights, development and poverty reduction,” he said.
Eliasson also indicted the UN Security Council for not doing enough to resolve the crises in Ukraine and Syria owing to the failure to take a united stand over the issues.
“We do not under-estimate the role that you (Nigeria) play not only in global peace and security, but also in development. “There can be no peace without development or development without peace, so we consider Nigeria a partner,” Eliasson added.
Ambassador Wali said Nigeria and Africa still need the assistance of the international community to lift their people out of poverty.
Commenting on the activities of the Boko Haram sect, Wali said “…is brand new in Nigeria. It took us by surprise and we are trying desperately to deal with the situation.”
The Minister however assured that the federal government is dealing with the situation appropriately.
