American University of Nigeria, in collaboration with German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), have empowered 300 Almajiris and out-of-school girls with basic education in Adamawa state.

The ‘Feed and Read’ program was initiated by the former AUN President Margie Ensign which provides basic preparatory education to young girls and Almajiris in communities that may not afford it.

Speaker of Adamawa state House of Assembly, Alhaji Kabiru Mijinyawa said the programme is one of the best in the locality because the beneficiaries are children taken from the Qur’anic schools who are being trained for nine months on basic educations, such as identification of letters, reading and writing.

Hon. Kabiru called on parents of the beneficiaries to encourage their siblings into enrolling them into formal educational system.

Dr. Dawn Dekle, President of the American University of Nigeria said the idea behind the programme is to provide the children with dreams making them learn basics English, Maths, social skills as they now have an opportunity to become catalysts of knowledge by helping other members of their family in knowledge-seeking.

Dekle stressed that education is the first and most fundamental human rights and an educated person will become enlightened to understand and pursue other rights and freedom.

She advised parents to enrol their children into schools as no persons should be denied the opportunity to learn and grow into productive and active members of the society on account of background, gender or the circumstance they find themselves.

In his remark, Denmark Ambassador, Tobben Gettermann called on the graduants to continue to learn and get education and never forget the ‘Feed and Read’ programme as their first step into the new world.
