Islamic scholars have urged aviation workers to uphold discipline and the fear of God in the discharge of their duties, noting that such values are essential for guaranteeing safety and integrity within the aviation industry.

The scholars made the call during a Ramadan lecture and Iftar Dinner organised by Skyway Aviation Handling Company PLC (SAHCO) in Lagos.

Professor Tajudeen Olalekan Yusuf who spoke on Ramadan: The School of Spiritual Discipline, Economic Justice, and Ethical Business Transformation,” stated that “Ramadan is not merely a religious season” but a training institution designed by Allah to refine human character.

“Ramadan is a school. And every one of us here is a student in that school,” emphasizing the importance of spiritual values in strengthening professionalism and accountability in airport operations.

He added, “This is where Ramadan becomes relevant to professional life.

In an organization like SAHCO, discipline is essential. Aviation operations depend on precision, accountability, and safety. A small lapse can have enormous consequences.

“Ramadan therefore trains us in self-control, time management, and moral discipline—qualities that are also essential for professional excellence.

“Fasting allows those who are comfortable to experience, even temporarily, the feeling of hunger that many people live with daily.”

He explained that if individuals are able to abstain from food and drink in private during fasting because of their awareness that God is watching, they should equally be able to avoid unethical practices in the workplace.

He noted that aviation operations require strict adherence to safety procedures, precision and accountability, warning that negligence or compromise in professional duties could endanger lives and disrupt operations.

He stressed that workers in airport operations, cargo handling and aviation logistics carry significant responsibility because their roles involve managing critical processes that affect passengers, cargo and overall aviation safety.

According to him, discipline rooted in the fear of God can help workers maintain the highest safety standards and avoid shortcuts that could compromise operational integrity.

He added that when professionals combine technical competence with strong moral character, the aviation industry will become safer, more reliable and more trusted by the public.

In her opening address, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of SAHCO, Mrs. Adenike Aboderin, welcomed guests and thanked them on behalf of the SAHCO Chairman, Dr Taiwo Afolabi (CON) for honouring the invitation.

She emphasized the company’s strong belief in faith, inclusiveness, and mutual respect among people of different religious backgrounds. She highlighted that SAHCO remains committed to fostering an environment where diversity is respected and celebrated.

According to her, Ramadan is a period that promotes reflection, sacrifice, compassion, and discipline, values that are equally important in the corporate world. She explained that SAHCO believes such gatherings help strengthen bonds among Partners and Stakeholders while also encouraging ethical conduct and professionalism in the aviation industry.
