AWQAFON inaugurates BOT, management team

The Awqaf Organization of Nigeria (AWQAFON) has inaugurated pioneer Board of Trustees (BOT) and management team to steer its affairs.

Waqaf is an inalienable endowment in form of cash, land or other valuable properties given over for religious, charitable purposes.

Speaking at the inuaguration, the Vice Chancellor, Bayero University Kano, Professor Muhammad Yahuza Bello, outlined three challenges the organization would undertake to ensure success and sustainability in its activities.

The challenges, according to him include fashion out a unified front for all the states of the federation to work together in Awqaf activities rather than doing it separately.

“Secondly, the organization must learn from the successes and failures recorded by similar organizations both within and outside the country, so as to improve upon the successes and avoid those factors that are causing failures.

“Lastly, the organization must assist states and organizations that are into waqaf to find a way of developing and sustaining the programme.”

Prof Bello said it was indeed a herculean task but with commitment and dedication to the course, the newly inaugurated board of trustees and management team would succeed.

In his address, the Chairman of the occasion who is also the Director CICID, Dr Bashir Aliyu Umar, said he was optimistic that there was a strong ground for collaboration between the new organization and his centre.

“CICID’s vision of studying Islamic civilization and its relevance in addressing contemporary challenges makes AWQAFON a suitable partner, because it is an NGO dedicated to promoting waqaf awareness, knowledge, training and best practices.”

The Emir of Kano, represented by Bauran Kano and District Head of Rogo, Alhaji Muhammad Mahraz, tasked people to endeavour to spend their wealth in the course of Allah for the benefit of the society.

Speaking to Kano Chronicle shortly after the inauguration, the Chairman of the BOT, Dr Miswaru Bello, said three institutions with a common interest collaborated to form AWQAFON: Islamic Law Department of the Bayero University, Khairat Islamic Trust and Sa’adiyya Waqaf Foundation.

He added that the organization would revert to the abandoned treasure of Islam with regard to endowments for the sustainable development of the Ummah.
