The magistrate in charge of the Ogudu magistrate’s court in Lagos, Mrs O. Sule-Amzat, yesterday told a baker he would spend the next five years in prison for breaking into his employer’s shop.

Samson Sanjo, 33, was arrested after he allegedly broke into the shop on October 20, 2017 and attempted to steal from there. 

Sanjo was said to have been arrested by neighbours who gave him the beating of his life before the arrival of the shop owner. 

Police prosecutor, Lucky Ihiehie, told court that the accused committed the offences at No. 510, Ikorodu Road, Lagos.

Ihiehe said the complainant, Mrs Islamiat Owoyelu, a trader, reported the incident at Alapere police post in Ketu, Lagos. “The complainant received a phone call from one of her neighbours that the accused, who had once worked for her, had used an iron cutter to cut off the padlock of her shop.  She said the accused was caught and beaten by people before she arrived,” he said.

Ihiehie said the complainant also told the police that her shop had been raided twice early in October and N37,000 was stolen from the shop.

Mrs Sule-Amzat sentenced the accused to jail after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of housebreaking and entering to steal. Saying the prosecution was able to prove its case beyond reasonable doubts, the magistrate said the convict should serve the five years without an option of fine. 

“The prosecution established that the convict, a baker, had worked in the shop and was prosecuted about two years ago for stealing N75,000 from the same shop,” she said.
