Speaking in Abuja, Mahmoud attributed the recent success recorded by the FCT athletes at the just concluded 17th National Sports Festival to the moral and financial support which the contingent enjoyed from the minister.

FCT won 6 gold, 12 silver and 22 bronze medals to place 16 on the medals table out of the 36 states that took part in the Games.

Mahmmud said as an indigene of Bauchi State, he is proud to associate himself with the FCT minister whom he said has made meaningful contributions to sports development in the territory.

He said even as the minister is from his state, he would have been the first to castigate him if he had failed to give the necessary support to sports in the FCT.

Mahmmud therefore said as the minister has proved to a performer, he deserves sincere commendation from all sports loving Nigerians and he wants to be the first to give him a pat on the back for a job well done.

He recalled that shortly before they departed for the sports festival, FCT athletes who won gold at the KADA Games were allocated plots of land in Abuja in addition to other incentives.

According to him, the magnanimity fired up the athletes who went on to post impressive performances at the Garden City Games.

“I want to commend the minister not because he is my brother but it is for the reason that he is a performer. He has done so much for sports in the FCT. In our culture we don’t praise failure, if he did not do well, I won’t praise him.

“If you look at the recent sports festival you will discover that FCT athletes performed well because they were adequately motivated. He is promoting sports not only in the FCT but the country because every state is represented in the FCT”.

He said going by the attention being given to sports by the minister, in a short while, the territory would be the Mecca of sports in the country.

Mahmmud therefore urged the minister to give support to clubs in the territory to enable them qualify to compete in the Nigeria Premier League.
