Bandits abducted 16 persons and set some houses ablaze in Makeri, Mai-Ido and Kushumi communities in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
A community leader from the area, who confirmed the incident to our reporter over the phone on Tuesday, said the incident happened on Monday around 12pm.
He said the bandits, who were in large numbers, with some of them wearing army uniforms and wielding AK-47 rifles, attacked three communities in broad daylight.
He said the bandits struck when some of the villagers had gone to the farm.
He said the abducted victims included 11 women and five children who were whisked away amid sporadic gunshots by the bandits.
“The bandits targeted when the men had all gone to their farms. They invaded the three communities and set some houses and farm produce ablaze,” he said.
He said some troops at Kagarko town were alerted but that before their arrival, the bandits had escaped with the victims.
“But I have been informed this morning that the troops are on the trail of the bandits towards Hayin-Dam and Kurutu forest which borders Kachia LGA,” he said.
The community leader, however, said some of the villagers had fled to Kagarko town and neighbouring Janjala for shelter.
Police in the area confirmed the incident but declined further comments, referring our reporter to the command’s headquarters.
The spokesman of the Kaduna State Police Command, ASP Hassan Mansur, could not be reached for comment at the time of filing this report yesterday.
