Gunmen suspected to be bandits have reportedly attacked some travellers and abducted four of them along the Igbeti–Kishi Road in Irepo Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Daily Trust reports that Kishi, a boundary town in the northern part of Oyo State, is the hometown of the State Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal.

Locals told our correspondent that gunmen intercepted vehicles plying the route on Wednesday night and whisked away passengers into nearby forests.

It was gathered that the incident occurred around the forest reserve along the route.

While sources said about eight passengers were abducted, the police confirmed four.

The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, in a statement issued on Thursday in Ibadan, said coordinated search and rescue operations were ongoing to secure the victims’ release.

The statement read, “The command remains resolute in its commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and urges members of the public to remain calm while providing any useful information that could assist ongoing operations.”
