Two farmers have been reportedly killed while unspecified numbers of others were kidnapped on Wednesday in the Zazzaga Community of Munya Local Government Area of Niger State.

The LG chairman, Najume Abdulamid Aminu Kuchi, disclosed this at the Annual Stakeholders Flood Sensitisation and Awareness organised by North South Power Company Limited held in Minna, the state capital.

Aminu said “For the past four months, we’ve been having some peace but for the past five days, the attacks have come up again. It’s day by day now, we have been receiving attacks. As at yesterday, bandits entered the Zazzaga Community; they killed two people; they kidnapped some.”

The chairman said his local government had been faced with twin challenges of banditry and flooding for the past years that had hindered farming and fishing activities in the area.

 Earlier, the Executive Vice-chairman, North South Power Company Limited, Engr Olubunmi Peters represented by Hassan Abdullahi, the Consultant on Corporate Social Responsibility said there was need for quick implementation of the national flood emergency preparedness and response plan across states  to advance national development, saying that the plan once implemented, would provide more resilience and development among affected communities.

The Chief Operating Officer, Shiroro Hydroelectric Power Station, Engr. U. E. Chioke said people needed to be reminded of the precautionary measures to avert the effect of flooding.

He said 52 per cent of workforce in Shiroro Hydroelectric Power Dam was allocated to Niger State as part of the corporate social responsibility of the power station, lamenting that some projects started by the company had been stalled by banditry in the area.

Communities around the newly constructed Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Dam expressed concerns over the rise in water level of the dam, calling on authorities to alert them before releasing the water to avoid damages.
