Suspected bandits shot and killed two members of the Volunteer Guards of Nigeria (VGN) on the outskirts of Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.

Reports indicate that the slain officers, identified as Abbas Idris and Ibrahim Bello Hussain, were killed in an ambush during an operation on Friday.

Residents of Lokoja described the incident as a heavy blow to the area, citing the deceased’s significant contributions to local security.

The Chairman of Lokoja Local Government, Comrade Abdullahi Adamu, confirmed the incident in a statement on Saturday.

He extended condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the fallen vigilantes.

“These brave officers were part of a dedicated Joint Task Force stationed in the Atsawa community, near Jamata,” Adamu stated.

He added that, “Their vigilance and sacrifices have significantly improved security in the area. We stand in solidarity with the bereaved families during this painful period. The sacrifice of Abbas Idris and Ibrahim Bello Hussain will not be in vain, Insha Allah. They will be remembered for their courage and dedication, and their legacy will continue to inspire others to serve with integrity and selflessness.”

In a similar vein, the state Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Abubakar Bashiru Gegu, expressed his deepest respect for the two young volunteers.

“Husseini and Abbas were not just names. They were brave young men who chose to stand in the way so that others could live in safety,” Gegu said. “They answered a call that many fear to answer, carrying that responsibility with courage and dignity. They paid the supreme price for our security, our peace, and our future. Their sacrifice will not be forgotten.”

The state police spokesperson, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, could not be reached on phone as his line failed to connect at the time of filing this report.
