Herds of cattle have been rustled by armed bandits in the Lade community, Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State.
This development is the latest in a series of attacks by armed groups in rural communities across the state.
A resident of the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attack occurred around 10 pm when armed assailants stormed several villages under the cover of darkness and made away with an entire herd of cattle.
“Although no lives were lost, the damage is enormous. These cattle were our only means of sustenance. The raid left families shattered and plunged the community into fear,” the resident said.

He explained that the bandits executed the operation with alarming precision, taking advantage of the limited security presence in the rural area.
“People heard shouts and the sound of stampeding cattle, but it was too late to react. By morning, only hoofprints were left behind,” he added.
A vigilante leader in Lade, Mohammed Baba, told Daily Trust that the stolen cattle belonged to multiple residents and not just a single owner.
He described the incident as deeply troubling for the entire community.
“The cattle were the collective livelihood of many households. This is not just a theft; it’s a direct attack on our survival,” he said.
Confirming the incident to our correspondent on Sunday, Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, said the rustling also occurred in Lafiagi, Edu Local Government Area, but noted some recovery efforts.
“The cattle rustling also happened in Lafiagi, not only Lade. We have recovered almost all the cattle in Lafiagi, but for Lade, we are still working on it,” he stated.
