It will be recalled that Nigerians residing in that country were attacked by South Africans in a wave of xenophobia assaults last year with Nigerians losing their property.

“I will advise that you begin to look into this issue now as they may blow up again,’’ Bankole told an audience of South African Parliamentarians at a dinner in cape Town, South Africa, on Thursday.

The Speaker, who said such attacks were not peculiar to South Africa, urged the authorities to ensure harmony among African people living in the country.

He explained that such attacks were often perpetrated by people reacting wrongly to their fellow brothers and restated the need for African unity.

Responding, Mr Maxwell Sisulu, Bankole’s counterpart in South Africa, said conscious efforts were being made to smoothen relations with Nigeria.

He said the parliaments had agreed to work together and noted that this was

a foundation of better things to come.

Sisulu said both countries have identified areas of greater cooperation on issues concerning women, children with disabilities and trade among others.(NAN)
