Ahead of Saturday’s by-elections across the country, Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin on Wednesday led members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a mega rally across Bagwai and Shanono local government areas of Kano State.
Barau was joined by the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Abdullahi Ata; Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations, Engr. Abubakar Kabir Abubakar Bichi; and other party stakeholders to mobilise support for APC candidates ahead of the polls.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed August 16 for bye-elections in Bagwai and Shanono, while a supplementary election will be held in Ghari (Kunchi) Local Government Area.
The Kano by-elections are widely seen as an early test of strength for both the APC and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially following the resignation of the state’s former governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, as the national leader of the APC.
Kano, Nigeria’s second most populous state, has been a key political battleground in recent years, with the NNPP sweeping to power in the 2023 governorship race. Saturday’s contest is thus expected not only to determine immediate legislative representation but also to signal which party is gaining momentum in the state’s volatile political landscape.
The Wednesday rally drew large crowds of party supporters, with APC leaders urging residents to come out in large numbers to secure victory for the party.
Speaking at the event, Senator Barau said voting for APC candidate Ahmad Kadamu would strengthen Federal Government presence and projects in the area.
“Voting APC in the bye-election means laying the groundwork for victory in the 2027 gubernatorial and presidential elections,” Barau said.
The campaign train later moved to Ghari, where the APC flag was presented to the party’s candidate for the supplementary poll.
In his remarks, Engr. Bichi expressed confidence that the APC would win the House of Assembly contests, citing the party’s performance at the federal level.
