The Barewa Old Boys Association (BOBA) has commended the federal government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for renaming the University of Abuja as Yakubu Gowon University.
Secretary General of BOBA, Air Vice Marshal Ibrahim Shafi’i (Retd), in a statement on behalf of the organisation said the government’s action is a well-deserved national recognition by the president for a distinguished elder statesman, the longest serving, oldest surviving former Head of State and the greatest champion of Nigeria’s unity.
“The choice of the University of Abuja for the honour of General Yakubu Gowon is very apt as Abuja symbolises the strength in unity of the diverse groups and interests of Nigeria, which General Gowon personifies and exemplifies throughout his life.
“We are even more excited that this recognition by the president is coming on the heels of the wide celebrations of the 90th birthday anniversary of General Yakubu Gowon on 19 October 2024. It is indeed a most fitting honour to Nigeria’s living legend.

“While appreciating the commendable recognition of the Chairman of BOBA Board of Trustees, we equally call on Mr President to please consider a befitting honour to Prof. Iya Abubakar, who also turned 90 on 14th December 2024. Prof. Iya Abubakar is another brilliant genius produced by Barewa College who served Nigeria meritoriously in various capacities, especially in the educational sector,” Shafi’i said.
He said that Prof. Abubakar’s almost 70 years First Class Record at the University of Ibadan remains unmatched up until date and also has the distinction of becoming a world-renowned Professor of Mathematics at barely 30 years of age and served as Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of the University of Ibadan, Minister of Defence and Distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic.
“We strongly recommend that President Bola Tinubu should graciously consider an appropriate honour for this giant genius in his lifetime,” Shafi’i said.
