The Liberian President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, has described the outcome of the last Thursday’s presidential election in The Gambia as s ‘good news’ to West African sub-region. 

Sirleaf, who is also the Chair of Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, spoke yesterday while briefing newsmen during her visit to the ECOWAS Commission in Abuja. 

According to her, the fact that the incumbent president, Yahya Jammeh conceded defeat shows that democracy has come to stay in the sub-region. 

“This is good news for Gambia, good news for ECOWAS, good news for Africa and good news for the world. Once again, democracy has prevailed and so we just hope that Gambians can now continue along their development path,” she said. 

Sirleaf disclosed that the 15-member bloc had written to President Jammeh to commend his show of statesmanship after suffering a stunning defeat. 

“We have also written to the president-elect, Adama Barrow for being able to get the Gambian people to vote for him in such a manner,” she added. 

Meanwhile, the Liberian leader said though ECOWAS member states are still vulnerable to terrorist threats, but with exchange of information and intelligence, terrorism would be stamped out of the sub-region.
