Bauchi State government has embarked on risk assessment of areas vulnerable to environmental disasters.

The assessment is being carried out by the state’s Ministry of Environment and Solid Minerals across the 20 local government areas of the state that suffer environmental degradation as a result of natural or human activities.

The commissioner, Dr. Audu Gani Bogoro said the measure became necessary in order to have a clear picture of what the state is facing in terms of environmental challenges.

He said that Bauchi State has a very large land mass with varied climactic and topographic variations, which gave rise to different environmental challenges across the state.

Dr Bogoro said, “We have visited places that have been devastated by natural phenomenon over the years in forms of erosion or places susceptible to flooding and other challenges. We have also visited mining sites where we have observed that some measures have to be taken to protect the environment while mining activities are taking place.” 

He said Bauchi State government will identify areas that are more vulnerable and will engage all stakeholders including community leaders and members of the communities to reduce the impact of environmental degradation.
