Bauchi state deputy governor, Engineer Nuhu‎ Gidado has challenged the 36 States Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs) to formulate meaningful policies that will uplift the standard of education in the country.

Gidado made the call in a statement by the Press Secretary to the state governor, Abubakar Al-Sadique on Thursday when the Minister of State for Education, Professor Anthony Gozie Anwuka led Chairmen of the Universal Basic Education Commission and the 36 States Universal Basic Education Boards and Abuja on a courtesy call to the government house.

The courtesy call was made ahead of the 17th Quarterly meeting of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the 36 States Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs) holding at the Yankari Games Reserve in Bauchi.

He called on them to come up with far reaching policies that will uplift the standard of education and make life meaningful to the future generation of Nigerians.

 

The Acting Governor, who is also the commissioner of education in Bauchi state assured the minister of the state government’s commitment to implement all policies formulated to transform the education sector.

 

He however lamented the almost complete dilapidation of schools and the sorry state of education in the State when the APC administration assumed office in 2015.

 

He pointed out that with the prioritisation of education and allocation of 20% of the State’s budget as well as his appointment to supritend over the affairs of the Ministry of Education, the ugly state of education is gradually being reversed.

 

Engineer Gidado said education is taken by the administration of Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar as the bedrock of any societal living and had resolved to overhaul the education sector especially the negative attitude of critical stakeholders in the sector.

 

He explained that the poor state of education necessitated the government to embark on capacity training for teachers who had not undergone any training for decades and intensive management training for over 700 School Based Management Committees members from different schools in parts of the State.

 

Speaking earlier, the Minister of State for Education, Professor Anthony Gozie Anwuka told the Acting Governor that the Universal Basic Education Commission’s meeting with 36 States’ Universal Basic Education Boards 17thQuarterly meeting in Bauchi State was to discuss pertinent issues that affect education at the basic level, with a view to proffering possible solutions to the problems bedeviling the sector.

 

While appreciating the hospitality of Bauchi State to them, Minister said Bauchi State volunteered while planning which state is ready to host the meeting, assuring the meeting will deliberate on the most critical issues that affect education as the basic level.

 

Engineer Nuhu Gidado assumed duty as Acting Governor on Monday, 9th January 2017 following the commencement of leave of Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar.‎
