The Bauchi State Institute of Education Kangere has matriculated 1,650 pioneer students.
Out of the number, 823 will study various courses under the NCE programme while 849 are diploma students.
In his welcome address, Provost of the institute, Dr. Garba Ibrahim, said the occasion marks a major step in the struggle to improve the standard of education in the state.
He said the state needed additional Colleges of Education to provide qualified teachers because of the abolishing of the Grade II Teacher Training Colleges.
He disclosed that the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) has given approval to the institute to start with nine programmes with an annual carrying capacity of 1,650 students which will subsequently be increased to cover programmes of a conventional College of Education.
