Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has granted executive pardon to 73 inmates across custodial centres in the state, describing the decision as a constitutional duty guided by compassion, justice and fairness, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

Addressing the released individuals at the Government House in Bauchi, the governor said that the clemency, exercised under Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution, followed recommendations from the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy after a thorough review process.

The governor explained that the beneficiaries were selected based on their age, health conditions, length of sentence served, minor offences, and demonstrated remorse, emphasising that those convicted of capital offences were excluded.

Mohammed further disclosed that the gesture coincided with the Ramadan season, adding that mercy complements justice and provides deserving individuals with an opportunity for rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

The governor also approved N100,000 for each of the released inmates to support their reintegration into society.

Also speaking, the Attorney General and Chairman of the Council for Prerogative of Mercy, Hassan Elyaqub SAN, disclosed that 117 applications were reviewed before 73 inmates were found qualified for the governor’s approval.

Walida’s abduction case will be pursued to logical conclusion – Gov Namadi

Jigawa State Governor, Umar Namadi, has assured that the state government will pursue the abduction case involving a teenage girl, Walida Abdulhadi, to its logical and legal conclusion to ensure justice is served.

A statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Hamisu Mohammed Gumel, on Wednesday said the governor gave the assurance on Wednesday while receiving Walida’s parents alongside their legal representative at the Government House in Dutse.

 

During the meeting, Governor Namadi briefed the family on Walida’s current condition, reaffirming the administration’s commitment to her full rehabilitation, education and overall welfare.

 

He disclosed that Walida is currently undergoing medical rehabilitation, adding that she would be reunited with her family upon completion of the treatment programme.

 

Governor Namadi further revealed that the government would re-enrol the teenager in school and fully sponsor her education.

 

Describing the incident as a clear case of kidnapping, the governor vowed that the state government would follow due legal processes to ensure that all those found culpable are brought to justice.
