Bauchi State Governor, Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, on Monday inaugurated an Inter-Faith Committee of Imams and Christian clerics to sensitise citizens on peaceful coexistence, religious tolerance, and ethnic harmony in Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro local government areas.
Speaking at the ceremony held at the Government House, Bauchi, the governor said the initiative was necessary to consolidate peace in the areas, recently threatened by the actions of unpatriotic elements.
Mohammed said his administration has invested heavily in security and peace-building, stressing that the state will not allow its hard-earned stability to be undermined.
He said religious leaders are uniquely positioned to mediate conflicts, foster interfaith dialogue, and inspire non-violent resolutions.
“We are committed to providing every support to ensure the committee succeeds, and we will not allow anyone, no matter how highly placed, to scuttle the serenity and harmony we have attained,” the governor said.
He urged the committee to use religious teachings to counter hatred and violence with love, forgiveness, and mutual respect, describing clergymen as trusted authorities capable of bridging divides and de-escalating tensions.
The committee’s mandate includes sustained sensitisation campaigns, promoting intergroup communication, and encouraging values that strengthen social cohesion.
Mohammed further pledged continued collaboration with security agencies while integrating peace advocacy into the state’s societal reorientation programme.
In their separate remarks, the co-chairmen of the committee, Imam Fa’izu Ado Musa of Tafawa Balewa and Rev. Father Benson Bature, assured of their collective commitment to achieving the objectives.
