Not fewer than 1,501 cases of Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) were reported between January and June 2023 in Bauchi State. 

Gender Officer of Bauchi State Police Command, Deputy Superintendent Ahmed Garba, who disclosed this during one-day training on SGBV organised by the National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Bauchi State chapter, said, “A total of 1,501 cases of Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) were reported between January and June 2023.” 

 Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Musa Muhammad, assured that the command would collaborate with critical stakeholders in the state to tackle the menace of SGBV among innocent and vulnerable people, adding that the command will explore all avenues to support the prosecution process of offenders with a view to addressing SGBV in the state.

CP Muhammad who described the perpetrators as idiots, noted that their mental faculties must be checked as they are behaving like animals.

Earlier in her remarks, the Chairperson of NAWOJ in Bauchi, Hajiya Rashida Yusuf Mohammed, said a total of 25 journalists were selected from various media organisations to participate in the  training, saying, “Bauchi State has signed into law the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act in 2022 to eliminate all forms of violence and punish offenders found guilty but the menace is rampant in society.”
