Bauchi State has recorded three new deaths and 16 new cases of COVID-19, according to a State government official.

The Executive Chairman, Bauchi State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Rilwani Mohammed, who disclosed this to Daily Trust on Thursday, also said 31 patients were discharged.

The total number of positive cases is now 206 in the State.

Mohammed, who is also the Chairman of Surveillance and Contact Tracing sub-committee of the task force response committee on COVID-19, said the State was having a total of 172 active cases in three isolation centres across the State.

Mohammed said: “We have recorded 16 newly confirmed positive cases yesterday (Wednesday), three deaths, 31 discharged with 172 active cases currently receiving medication in the isolation centres.”

He appealed to residents of the State to continue to maintain personal hygiene while observing social as well as personal distancing to reduce the rate of community transmission.

Governor of the State, Bala Mohammed, had on May 10 declared a total lockdown of Katagum, Giade and Zaki Local Government Areas following reports of deaths and community transmission.

The governor said the total lockdown of the three LGAs was necessary to curtail the rapid community transmission.

However, some members of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, on Wednesday, called on the State government to review its COVID-19 order by lifting the ban on Friday prayers and Church services across the State.

They argued that they needed to call upon God to rescue the State from the claws of the virus since human efforts were failing.

This is coming as cases of the virus continue to rise in the State.

According to the data released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Wednesday night, the State had the fifth highest number of cases in the country with 206 positive patients.
