Bauchi State emerged overall winner of the second edition of the national Basic Education School Sports festival, scooping a total of 54 medals in different sporting events.

The hosts secured 19 gold, 21 silver and 14 bronze medals in sporting events involving both male and female athletes. 

Speaking during the closing ceremony held at the Abubakar Tafawa Stadium, Governor Bala Mohammed, commended UBEC for organizing the Games in the state, which he said brought together over 1,000 young Nigerian athletes and officials.

The governor who was represented by the Commissioner of Education, Dr Lawal Muhammad, acknowledged that the annual event would continue to unite young Nigerians from diverse cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds under sportsmanship, friendships and national integration.

In her remarks, the Executive Secretary, UBEC, Dr Aisha Garba said, the 10 days of sporting activities showcased team work, discipline, talents, determination, sportsmanship and unity among young pupils across the country.

Garba, represented by a zonal officer, Alhaji Abdullahi Shehu Jarma, commended the Bauchi state Government, NASSOF, SUBEB chairmen and other stakeholders for their support towards the development of education and sports in all the schools. According to the final medals table, host Bauchi state came first with 54 medals, followed by Delta with 53 medals, while Kaduna state occupied third position with 23 medals
