Bayelsa apprehends community leaders over diversion of flood relief items

Chairman of the committee, Chief Francis Doukpola,  said at a news conference on Monday that five community leaders who were members of the Community Development Committee, CDC, in their communities were discovered to have diverted bags of cement supplied by the committee for flood victims in their area.
According to Doukpola, though the committee would investigate the incident, the suspects would be sanctioned.
He said: “Out of the 130,000 bags of cement supplied to the over 300 communities affected by flood, those apprehended were discovered to have hijacked the bags of cement and diverted it to other uses. This is against the spirit of the flood management efforts in the state.”
On the study being conducted by the committee on a proper method of drainage management in the state capital, Doukpola said the ongoing study has shown that over 13 water channels have been identified in Yenagoa and a flood gate is being proposed to regulate the influx of water into the Epie creeks.”
