Bayelsa State at the weekend emerged champions of the National Baseball League hosted by Kwara State.

The feat was a continuation of the state’s rise in sports coming about a week after winning the maiden Niger Delta Sports Festival in Uyo.

Bayelsa defeated the host Kwara State by 10 runs to 9 in a tightly contested final, after six days of hostilities.

With 21 points from 8 games, Bayelsa topped the table while Kwara finished second with 18 points. 

Delta State came third with 15 points, followed by Oyo and Ondo, who ended the tournament with 3 points each.

The second phase of the Honours Independent National League is scheduled to hold in September, where the overall winner will be determined.

Speaking at the closing ceremony on Saturday at the Ilorin Baseball and Softball Park, the Founder and Chairman of Lubcon Group, Engr. Jani Ibrahim thanked the state government for the hosting and called for an upgrade of the facility to international standard.

He also said the hosting of the league in Ilorin has reaffirmed the state’s passion and commitment to the development of baseball and softball.

According to him, talents discovered during the tournament must be nurtured and developed for national and international prominence.

He appreciated the sponsor, Anaekwe Gideon Godwin of Honours Intercontinental Concepts Limited for his investment and faith in the game.
