The organizers of the annual Bayelsa State Governor’s Cup have entered into partnership with LaLiga giants FC Barcelona for coaches training and discovery of talented players.

The Director General of the tournament, Mr. Ono Akpe, who addressed the press on Tuesday ahead of the kickoff of the 2026 edition said the contract with the Spanish club has been signed.

He said a team of coaches from FC Barcelona would train a total of 50 coaches comprising 40 local and 10 coaches outside Bayelsa State.

“The FC Barcelona team will be coming to Bayelsa from 23rd to 25th of February for our international coaching clinic in Yenagoa.

“They will train 50 coaches, 40 will be local while 10 will come from outside Bayelsa to participate in the training.

“We will use this opportunity to hold a series of meetings and explore other potential and hope this will help solve our problems of getting our players abroad finally”,” he said.

Akpe also said the total prize money for the 2026 edition will be N80m with the overall winner taking home a whopping N30m.

He said second, third and fourth placed teams would smile home with N10m, N5m and N2m respectively.

On his part, the Director of the tournament, Mr Ebi Avi, said the preliminary round of competition will be played in 30 centres across the state.
