Bayelsa meet on flood management and mitigation

Chief Francis Doukpola, chairman of the state Post Flood Management Committee, said that the workshop with the theme “Towards Effective Flood Management’’ would be held in collaboration with the Flood Research Group of the Federal University, Otuoke.
He said that the workshop would provide a platform for sharing best practices in flood management and technology, as well as produce an action plan for collaboration between state, federal government, private sector and community stakeholders in flood control and management.
According to the chairman, the workshop would equally take inventory of the interventions and shortfalls experienced during the 2012 flood to enable states to be better prepared for the imminent 2013 flood so as to avoid the mistakes of the past.
Doukpola said the workshop would specifically look at flood control measure, causes of flood in Bayelsa, mitigation, monitoring/evaluation, enhancing institutional measures through capacity building of ecological agencies and other aspects of flood management.
He said that the workshop would also showcase further intervention efforts planned by the state Post Flood Management Committee.
