The Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation, (BBC), has launched its first ever short story writing award for female writers. This took place recently at the Rock View Hotel Royale, in Wuse II, Abuja.
The Acting Editor of the Hausa Service, Jimeh Saleh, said the contest is open to women of all ages writing in Hausa, irrespective of their nationality or experience.
The winner will be given $500, and two runner ups, £300, and $200 respectively, as well as plaques at a special awards night in Abuja on October 17. Other entrants who have sent in works will be given mention and be included in a compendium which will air on the BBC Hausa Service.
Saleh said BBC Hausa wants to make sure women’s voices are heard, especially in areas where they are not always commonly represented. The contest is intended to promote the culture of writing among women and also give them a platform to express their creativity. Historically, women in Africa have been known to be great custodians of folklore and gifted moonlight storytellers.   
BBC Hausa also provides radio, online and TV content in West Africa as well as to diaspora audiences.
