When and why did you start your business?
I started in 2010. I had to venture into this business after losing my banking job. I initially started with hairdressing before expanding to tailoring. When I started, I noticed people were admiring my designs which prompted me to acquiring more accessories. Anytime I attend any event, I took time to look at peoples’ outfit and their style.
How lucrative is the business?
It is lucrative when you know what you are doing. One thing I discovered is that people would always give their clothes to tailors who know their onions in the job. Again, you as a tailor must always be abreast with the latest styles so as to introduce your clients to those new styles. Once I look at the shape of my customer, I know what kind of attire fits her. Sometimes, they depend on you to advise them on style.
What do you consider as your achievements?
I have many staff (both men and women) that I tutored on tailoring and hairdressing. Most of them are on their own now. Being self-employed is an achievement on its own, not to talk of being an employer of labour. Besides, when your workers are happy and your customers are satisfied, that bring fulfillment.
Are there challenges in the business?
Yes. I doubt if there is a business devoid of challenges. When I started, I was paying my staff salaries from my savings until I broke even. Another major challenge is the issue of power. Most times, we run the business on generator. Sometimes, the workers would want salary increase and in the process, threaten to down-tool. Again, some clients would bring materials for sewing but will never come back to collect them. I have so many of them here. Some you may decide to dispose of after a long wait.
When is your peak period?
During festive periods like Christmas and Easter which is mostly characterised with burials?
What’s your advice for others, especially your fellow women who are still depending on their husbands for a living?
First of all, they must make up their minds on what they want to do. They should not allow life’s uncertainty to becloud their vision. After all, life is all about risk. When I was leaving the banking industry, I thought that was the end of life. But little did I know that that was just the beginning. I must confess that I have no regrets quitting the bank.
