Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has proscribed activities of trade unions operating in all the state-owned tertiary institutions of learning forthwith.

Bello said late Wednesday the decision to proscribe activities of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Trade Unions in Kogi State-owned Tertiary Institutions was due to what he described as "unjustifiable strikes action" by the unions.

The tertiary institutions affected by the proscription order include:

  • Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja;
  • Kogi State College of Education, Ankpa;
  • Kogi State College of Education Technical, Kabba;
  • College of Nursing and Midwifery, Obangede;
  • College of Health Sciences and Technology, Idah and
  • Kogi State University Teaching Hospital, Anyigba

Bello had earlier proscribed the activities of the Kogi State University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The governor has directed the state education ministry to liaise with the boards and managements of the schools to deem all staff of the institutions who do not resume normal academic duties immediately as having resigned  and to treat them accordingly.

He also directed the ministry to immediately find and engage suitable replacements for all academic staff vacancies, including those who have left, may wish to leave or who are deemed to have left the service of the Kogi State Government and the Institutions as a result of the ban.

He called on law enforcement and security agencies in the state to remain vigilant and be proactive in preventing the breakdown of law and order in any part of the state, "whether consequent on this ban, or for any reason whatsoever".
