Bendel Insurance beat 10-man Rangers to win Fed Cup after 43 years

Bendel Insurance emerged as the champions of the 2023 Nigeria Federation Cup, securing a 1-0 win over six-time champions, Enugu Rangers in the final at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Delta State Wednesday.

Imade Osarenkhoe scored from the penalty spot just before half-time after a Rangers defender was judged to have handled the ball in the penalty area, which resulted in the player being sent off after receiving his second yellow card of the game.

This is the fourth FA Cup title for the Monday Odigie-led Insurance team, having previously won the title in 1972, 1978, and 1980.

The victory ended their wait for a major title since 1995, when they won the West African Club Championship.

With their win, victorious Bendel Insurance will get the prize money and would also be representing Nigeria in the CAF Confederation Cup next season.

Following the conclusion of the Cup, Bendel Insurance joined Enyimba, Remo Stars and Rivers United to participate in CAF competitions next season.

Meanwhile, Bayelsa Queens defeated Rivers Angels in a penalty shootout to win the 2023 Women’s Federation Cup.

The first half of the game finished scoreless despite both teams having strong starts and cautious finishes. Both teams had numerous scoring opportunities but steadfast defenders from either side refused to break their lines.

However, the second half was a topsy-turvy affair as both teams attempted to score but were unable.

Bayelsa Queens won the penalty shootout 4-3 to win the championship after the regulation time ended 0-0.

Women’s champions Bayelsa Queens pocketed the sum of N10 million while Rivers Angels were N5m richer.

Men’s winners Bendel Insurance went home with the sum of N15 million while Rangers International got the sum of N7.5m
