Odigha said that payment for ecosystem services was part of a policy instrument articulated by the state to support sustainable forest development.
He made the disclosure at a five-day train the trainers workshop’ on the topic ‘Carbon Monitoring’ in Calabar.
The workshop trained forestry experts and stakeholders on the use of satellite and remote sensors to monitor carbon which will also oversee the image analyses and interpretation of field day date.
He said the state’s forestry commission plans to build capacity for development of adaptation measures in small, local communities and understand the nature of community vulnerability.
According to him, they would also identify opportunities for strengthening the adaptive capacity of communities, hence, the need for the workshop to assist in filling the gaps for effective execution of the REDD PLUS and other sustainable forest management programmes.
Earlier, Governor Liyel Imoke of the state vowed to sustain ongoing forest policy reforms to enable the state benefit from its forest resources.
Imoke said his administration has established links with relevant national and global regulatory policy making and funding bodies to enhance bio-diversity and sustainable forestry in the state.
