The Honorary Consul of Benin Republic in Nigeria, Alhaji Mutari Ali Daura, said last week that the occasion was convoked in order to foster unity and peaceful coexistence among the people of Benin Republic.
While stating that there is need to keep faith with the laws, norms and culture obtainable in their host country, Alhaji Daura, who is a Nigerian said: “Dr Boni Yayi is asking you today to keep the candle of African unity burning by respecting all the constituted authorities, laws, culture and norms of your host country. We have a duty to be focused in all we are doing. We have a duty to be good ambassadors of the Benin Republic where ever we live.”
He said, for nearly half a century, Benin had dreamt of a prosperous Benin Republic in a united Africa, saying that they wanted to build a nation which is devoid of poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, injustice.
Alhaji Daura said they need to exhibit patriotism, high-moral standard and a collective goal for national development. This position, he added, is part of the dreams and aspirations of President Boni Yayi. “I am convinced that we believe totally in His Excellency’s effort towards bringing about a total change for the betterment of all,” said the diplomat.
The consul therefore noted that Africa is hugely blessed, and that if the African countries would harness their resources together they can rule the world.
He used the occasion to advocate for more support to the 8 February 2007 Memorandum of Understanding on Benin-Nigeria-Togo Co-prosperity Alliance Zone (COPAZ) signed in Abuja by the presidents of the three countries.
“COPAZ is a good idea and if the tempo is maintained, I see the West African countries becoming a strong economic union in the nearest future. The summit of the three sister countries was created to strengthen the traditional links of friendship and economic cooperation existing among them,” he said.
