Beninoise confessed to attempted murder, theft, court told

A prosecution witness yesterday told an FCT High Court that a 29-year-old Beninoise, Remi Mike, confessed to stealing $1000, N500,000 and also attempted to kill Mrs Jennifer Antuoun.

The police charged Mike on Nov. 30, 2018  with two counts of armed robbery and attempted culpable homicide.

The witness, Sgt. James Ameh, who is also the investigative officer, told the court that the defendants attacked Jennifer, after she caught him in the act.

“After he was arrested, he confessed that he committed the crime because he was broke and he needed money to take his wife to the hospital,” he alleged.

Ameh, had  informed the court that the confessional statement of the defendant was voluntary and that he signed it at the end.

The Police Prosecutor, Mr Stanley Nwafoaku, then applied that the confessional statement, hammer and knife be admitted as exhibit.

The defence counsel, Mr C. I Oke objected to the admissibility  of the confessional statement that it was obtained under duress.

Justice Silvanus Oriji then called for a trial-within-trial and adjourned the case until April 25.

Nwofoaku, had told the court that, the defendant while armed  with dangerous weapons broke into the victim’s room at Plot 339 Chief Okofowola Crescent Utako, FCT.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges. (NAN)
