The Police in Benue State have recovered 14 out of 26 victims who drowned in River Benue after their boat capsized near Kwaghter axis in Makurdi Local Government Area of the state.
Police Spokesperson in Benue Command, DSP Catherine Anene, who earlier confirmed that the incident happened on Sunday afternoon, said that efforts were still been made to find the other victims.
“The tragic incident of 5/7/2020 kept the command searching and hoping that victims of the boat mishap would be rescued alive, regrettably, a total of fourteen (14) corpses; eight (8) females and five (6) males were recovered from the river while other victims still missing,” she stated.
Anene said that the command commiserates with families of the deceased just as she advised members of the public to employ all protective measures and caution while sailing, as the turbulent flow of water during the rainy season, can create unforeseen circumstances.
The police image maker further noted that the State Commissioner of Police sympathised with the bereaved even as he commended the frantic efforts made by sailors and communities around the river bank during the rescue operation and urge them to educate their wards about the dangers of using waterways during this period.
