Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State says his administration has embraced the modern Information and Communication Technology, (ICT) driven initiative in order to turn around the economic fortunes of the state.
Ortom made the remark while delivering his speech at a two-day sensitisation workshop on ICT Utilisation and Sustainability for North Central Zone holding in Makurdi.
The governor noted that already the state government was partnering with an institute in the training of teachers, adding, that a bill for the establishment of Information Technology Agency is before the State House of Assembly for consideration.
Represented by the state’s Head of Service, Engr. George Ede, Ortom said his administration was also partnering with other organizations and individuals for teaching of ICT in schools and other organised sectors so as to positively impact the knowledge gained on the development of agriculture, education, healthcare and security among other sectors for the overall growth of the state.
Also speaking, the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, explained that the workshop was targeted at finding ways of advancing ICT for enhanced development purposes in the country.
Represented by NCC’s Kelechi Nwanko, Danbatta stressed that innovations in ICT technology will enhance critical sectors of development and information management as he urged participants at the event to use the opportunity to interact with the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) in identifying sustainability solutions for two key projects- the Community Resource Centre (CRC) and School Knowledge Centre, (SKC) to expand access to rural areas.
On his part, the Secretary of USPF, Ayuba Shuaibu said the organisation intends to achieve equitable ICT for all Nigerians with its ultimate objectives of the system of universal access and universal service provision to promote greater social equity and inclusion for people of Nigeria and to contribute to national economic, social as well as cultural development of the country at large.
